Why Did I Study Medical Acupuncture?

Let me tell you a story.  Over 10 years ago, my son, Craig, called us from California where he was attending law school.  He had a month of severe low back and hip pain, unresponsive to ibuprofen.  Of course, as an ex-football player, he was used to "playing with pain" so he didn't even think of seeing a doctor.  Well, to make a long story short, he went to the doctor. After a bone scan, MRI showing 2 mildly bulging low back discs,  and a nerve conduction study he was treated with 2 ineffective injections of epidural steroids.  Although still in agonizing pain, he was told because the MRI "wasn't too bad," he was not a surgical candidate and should return if his symptoms got worse!  Yeah, like they could get worse.

Fortunately, a friend saw his distress and suggested Craig see his acupuncturist.  Without consulting Dr. Dad, he went for treatment. After 3 treatments, he called us and said, "I know Dad won't believe it, but I haven't felt so good for over 3 months. As they say, the rest is history and I've never looked back. The wisdom and knowledge of Chinese Medicine never ceases
to impress me and how it explains some of the unknowns in western medicine is fascinating.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of puncturing the skin with needles at certain anatomical points in the body to relieve specific symptoms associated with many diseases. It is is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical practices in the world.  Its goal is to activate the natural, self-healing abilities of the body to treat illness.  It also strengthens and supports the body to maintain health and prevent future illness.

How Does It Work?

According to  traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture points are connected via pathways, or meridians through which the vital energy called  Qi (pronounced chee)  flows.  Our health is influenced by the quality, and quantity of Qi.  Imbalance in or disruption of the energy flow can cause disease.  Acupuncture corrects these imbalances and revitalizes the body's Qi.

In Western medicine,
based on extensive laboratory research that has become widely known and accepted, It's thought that acupuncture points have certain electrical properties.  When needled, the central nervous system is stimulated causing release of chemicals and neurotransmitters in the brain, spinal cord and muscles. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

Acupuncture is generally performed with metallic, solid, and hair-thin needles. Patients report different feelings associated with acupuncture, but most feel minimal pain as the needle is inserted. Acupuncture makes some people report feeling energized by the treatment, while others say they feel relaxed.  More than 3.2 million Americans have used acupuncture, and the numbers are growing.

Do I have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?

No.

What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

Acupuncture is performed with sterile, single-use metallic, solid, and hair-thin needles. Patients report different feelings associated with acupuncture.  Some people experience minimal pain as the needle is inserted.  Most patients  report feeling energized by the treatment, while others say they feel relaxed. Recognizing that acupuncture is safe, natural, drug free and effective, more than 3.2 million Americans have used acupuncture, and the numbers are growing.
